Gilberto Gil to unplug in Israel
Brazilian musical legend Gilberto Gil will be going head to head against teen favorite Justin Bieber, when the two performers appear on the same night in Tel Aviv. Gil will be playing at Hechal Hatarbut on April 14, the same evening Bieber has confirmed a show in Hayarkon Park across town. But it’s unlikely that there’s anyone who would want to see both performers anyway.
Gil, one of Brazil’s most important singers, composers and instrumentalists, has recorded over 30 albums and is synonymous with Brazilian music. He’s bringing his ‘String Concert’ project to Tel Aviv, in which, together with his son and guitarist Bem Gil and cellist Jaques Morelenbaum, he’ll play acoustic versions of his top songs. The show’s already been a huge hit throughout Europe, and Gil has cemented his status as a true international musical ambassador.
It’s your choice – Bieber or Gil. • David Brinn
Ivgy to direct at Gesher Theater
Moshe Ivgy will direct Princess Yvonne by Polish playwright/ novelist Witold Gombrowicz for the Gesher Theater. Rehearsals start next week with Ivgy’s daughter Dana in the title role. This is the first time the multi award-winning actor has directed, and also marks the local debut of the play that Gombrowicz sardonically called a fable for grownups. Gombrowicz (1904-69) is regarded as one of Poland’s most influential literary figures. • Helen Kaye
