Southern Taiwan hit by 6.4 magnitude quake, weather bureau says

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Taiwan's south on Tuesday near the city of Chiayi, the island's weather administration said.

The quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei. The quake had a depth of 9.4 km (6 miles), the weather administration said.

Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.
