China has been stepping up its missions near Taiwan as the January 13 presidential and parliamentary elections on the island approach.

A lieutenant colonel surnamed Hsiao, based in the army's Aviation and Special Forces Command, had been detained on suspicion of leaking defense secrets to "foreign forces including China."

Tan said Japan's annual defense paper projected a "wrong perception" of China, and "deliberately exaggerates the so-called Chinese military threat."
