On July 13, 2024, former US president Donald Trump was the victim of an attempted assassination attempt while at campaigning ahead of the 2024 US presidential elections at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The would-be assassin, identified by the FBI as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was positioned on a nearby rooftop and fired on Trump with an assault rifle, hitting the former president in the ear and hitting several others, killing at least one person before being shot and killed by Secret Service personnel.
Much of the circumstances surrounding the assassination, such as Crooks's motivation, are still unknown at the time of writing.
