The haredi parties are threatening to dissolve the government if the new draft bill is not passed immediately following the summer Knesset break
“The Army of the People” cannot be a hollow slogan. It is important that Israel ease the haredi community’s path toward national service – with care, sensitivity, and respect for Torah study.
The first clause of the bill, called Basic Law: Torah Study, says, "Torah study is a supreme value in the heritage of the Jewish people."
A particularly contentious issue addressed in the poll was the passing of the reasonableness clause. The findings indicate that 46% of the respondents are against it, while 35% are in favor.
“Our role and duty is to help the disadvantaged. I hope we will find a listening ear in the government offices. We will demand this until it is carried out,” added Ra’am MK Yasser Hujirat.
According to the survey, the Blue and White party led by Benny Gantz continues to lead with 28 mandates.
The threat is the latest in a series of incidents of infighting and threats to not vote with the coalition made since the coalition was formed.
A possible result of this criticism will become even more incendiary, rather than softened or silenced entirely.
It might well be that five months is too short a period to determine whether the threat to democracy will be realized.
With Rabbi Gershon Edelstein's presence gone, fighting between the Israeli haredi factions of Degel Hatorah and Agudat Yisrael may get out of hand.
